Move over avocado toast, these cottage cheese toast recipes are about to take over! With just a few simple ingredients, you can create the best easy breakfast using cottage cheese and a few of your favorite toppings.
Why You'll love Adding Cottage Cheese to Toast
Whether you're looking for a healthy breakfast, an easy 5 minute lunch, or a quick afternoon snack, cottage cheese toast is a great addition to mealtime
There are a million different ways you can serve this viral sensation. So I'm sharing a few of my favorite savory cottage cheese toast ideas along with some sweet toasts to get you started.
When it comes to choosing a high quality creamy cottage cheese, I always recommend buying Good Culture Cottage Cheese. You can find this brand in your local grocery store in the dairy aisle. A lot of people also recommend hood Country Style Cottage Cheese but I've never seen it here in Florida.
And for all those cottage cheese haters, don't worry! You can whip it to make it smooth and creamy. As long as you're using a good qualitiy cottage cheese, it will almost taste like ricotta which I love!
And since there's almost 30 grams of protein in a cup of Cottage Cheese, a slice of cottage cheese toast makes it a great option for an easy meal.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Cottage Cheese: Cottage cheese is one of the healthiest cheeses out there and it's having a moment! If you want the best creamy cottage cheese for toast, you have to start out with a good brand. I highly recommend using Good Culture Plain Cottage Cheese.
When it comes to fat percentage - it truly doesn't matter. You can choose fat-free cottage cheese, whole milk or low fat cottage cheese - honestly whatever you prefer. It's so fluffy, the texture is spot on, and the mild flavor and ingredients are perfect.
Even most cottage cheese haters will agree that this is the best. But if you still don't like it because of the texture of cottage cheese, then no worries! I recommend making whipped cottage cheese by placing this high protein cheese in a small food processor. After whipping it for a few minutes, it'll be perfectly silky and spreadable. To me, smooth cottage cheese is remnant of ricotta cheese and almost cream cheese like. And if you make a big batch, you can keep it in an airtight container for up to a week - and maybe longer!
Toast: I always grab either a sourdough bread or my favorite protein bread from Aldi. You can also use wheat bread, rye bread, white bread or a bagel-thin. Since cottage cheese is pretty wet, you'll just want to make sure that it's sturdy and sliced thick to hold all this high-protein cheese and its toppings.
If you can't have regular bread, get creative! Of course you can always use your favorite gluten-free bread of choice, but why think outside of the box when it comes to a piece of toast. I recommend some sweet potato toast, fresh sliced tomatoes or even long-cut cucumber slices.
Favorite Toppings: Whether you're a fan of sweet cottage cheese toast or savory toasts, you can use a variety of toppings or your go-to favorite combinations on your new favorite tasty snack. Some of my favorite savory toppings include fresh herbs like fresh dill, fresh produce like red onion, fresh tomatoes, and lemon zest, chia seeds, black pepper, sea salt, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, or even a hard-boiled egg.
As for a sweet option, well it's endless, too! I love using fresh fruit like strawberries or peaches, maple syrup, a drizzle of honey (or even hot honey!), fig jam, candied nuts, and more! See my favorites below.
