Ingredients and Substitutions
FOR THE BISCUITS
- All Purpose Flour - I don't recommend switching up the flour as you'll need to adjust baking powder/etc. It's best to keep it as-is.
- Baking Powder - Same goes for baking powder - you need to use it to get those biscuits to rise!
- Kosher Salt - Kosher salt is ideal but this recipe also works with over types of fine salt.
- Sugar - Regular old white table sugar works perfectly in this recipe.
- Super Cold Salted Butter - As long as you're using super cold butter, this recipe works wonders - just add an extra pinch of salt if you're using unsalted butter.
- Buttermilk - There are a million hacks on the internet for buttermilk substitutions but I don't think they work as well. Best to stick to the real stuff but milk also works if you have to make it work!
FOR EACH SANDWICH
- Honey Butter Biscuit - You could absolutely use storebought biscuits if you don't feel like making mine from scratch!
- Honey Butter - Same goes with the honey butter. You can use storebought if you don't feel like making my recipe.
- Aldi Red Bag Chicken Breast - Chicken tenders also work for this recipe - as long as they're crispy and fried, they'll work just fine!
- Hot Honey Sauce - This is optional but my hot honey sauce adds the perfect pop of flavor. You can use regular honey if you don't like heat!
How to make it
Making these easy honey butter chicken biscuits is a breeze - especially since we're using red bag chicken to make our lives even easier!
FOR THE BISCUITS
Preheat the oven to 425F degrees.
Mix 3 cups flour,1 hefty tablespoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon sugar together.
Grate 1 stick of butter and add it to the dry ingredients. Then mix with your hands until it feels like sand.
Slowly stir in buttermilk with a fork or whisk.
Use your hands to knead the dough together - just be careful not overwork it so the butter doesn’t melt. It should be kind of loose.
Pour your dough onto a floured surface and add another 1-2 tablespoon of buttermilk if it looks too dry.
Use your hands to quickly pack it into shape into a long oval. Add 2 more tablespoon grated butter on top and fold both sides of the dough inwards to create 3 layers.
Use a flour dusted rolling pin to flatten it out so you have enough room to use your biscuit cutter.
Swiftly cut the biscuits (6-7 biscuits) and place them in a buttered cast iron skillet.
Cut up the remaining 2 tablespoon of butter and cover the top of the biscuits.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and add 2 tablespoon of the honey butter evenly across the biscuits so it melts into them.
When serving the biscuits, split them in half and add another teaspoon of honey butter before adding the chicken.
FOR THE HONEY BUTTER
Add room temp salted butter and honey to a small bowl and stir until combined.
FOR THE SANDWICH
Meanwhile the biscuits are baking, add the frozen red bag chicken breast (1 breast per each sandwich you plan on making) to your air fryer basket.
Airfry the chicken breast at 400F for 10-12 minutes. Remove it from the basket.
Once the biscuits are done, split them in half and add a tablespoon of honey butter followed by the fried chicken breast and a drizzle of hot honey.
Add the remaining half of the biscuit back on top to close the sandwich up.
Serve immediately with more honey butter for dunking.
