What is 1905 Inspired Viral Chopped Salad Sandwich?
As a Floridian, it's safe to say that the most iconic salad of our state is the 1905.
The original 1905 salad was created at the Columbia Restaurant in Tampa, Florida.
It's loaded with iceberg lettuce, ham, swiss cheese, grape tomatoes, green olives.
The shortcut dressing is a combination of lemon juice, Worcestershire and Garlic Expressions.
My 1905 inspired chopped salad sandwich is inspired by the viral tiktok chopped grinder sub trend.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Iceberg Lettuce - Romaine, Bibb or another crisp lettuce will work just fine.
- Virginia Ham - Spanish Ham is probably the most authentic way to make this but I love the sweetness that Virginia ham gives. You could use any deli style ham of your choice.
- Swiss Cheese - If you don't like Swiss, try Manchego.
- Grape Tomatoes - any sort of fresh tomatoes will work just fine!
- Green Olives - Green olives stuffed with pimentos are recommended but you could use another olive variety if you wanted. It just won't be the same!
- Parmigiano - Grana Padano, Pecorino another hard, aged Italian style cheese will work just fine.
- Garlic Expressions - The Columbia sells their own salad dressing but i honestly think Garlic Expressions is superior. You could use another garlicky italian vinaigrette if you wanted.
- Worchestershire - This provides so much umami to the dressing. I wouldn't recommend any subs. Maybe soy sauce if you absolutely had to?
- Lemon - Fresh lemon works best but the squeeze bottles work fine if you're in a pinch.
- Flaky Salt - Regular salt works just fine - I just like the texture of Maldon.
- Cuban Bread - Any sort of hoagie roll will work!

Store your chopped salad for no more 1 day as it starts to get soggy pretty quickly.

Yes but do not dress it! You can go ahead and chop everything up but leave the dressing off to ensure that it doesn't get soggy.
For example, since iceberg lettuce is prone to wilting, you may want to assemble the sandwich closer to the time of serving to maintain their freshness
Can you make the 1905 Inspired Viral Chopped Salad Sandwich with out meat?
Absolutely! We make it without the ham at least once a week for dinner and it's delicious! You could also add shrimp if you're a pescaterian.
