These marshmallow-stuffed hot chocolate French toast bites bring so much holiday joy. Sweet, gooey, and dunked in a cocoa sugar coating, they're the ultimate treat for snowy mornings or indulgent brunches.
Why You'll Love It
This hot chocolate french toast bites recipe takes the classic comfort of French toast and gives it a magical holiday twist.
We start with King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, which are naturally pillowy and slightly sweet—the perfect base for a fluffy marshmallow fluff filling.
Each roll is dipped in a cinnamon-vanilla french toast custard, then fried to golden perfection on all six sides for that crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside texture we all crave.
But here’s where the magic happens: After cooking, the rolls take a dunk in a cocoa-sugar mix that transforms them into the ultimate breakfast-dessert hybrid.
And we don't stop there - they're paired with hot chocolate for dipping, it’s like eating s'mores in breakfast form, but even better.
These marshmallow-stuffed rolls are also surprisingly easy to whip up—perfect for impressing guests at brunch or making an ordinary Saturday morning feel like a special occasion.
Whether you're treating the kids, hosting a holiday breakfast, or just indulging yourself (as you should), these rolls are the perfect combo of playful and decadent. Bonus: They’re just as fun to make as they are to eat!
Ingredients & Substitutions
- King's Hawaiian Original Sweet Rolls: These rolls are the perfect size and sweetness for this hot chocolate french toast bites recipe. Brioche or challah buns can also work if you can't find King's Hawaiian.
- Marshmallow Fluff: Adds gooey sweetness. You can use regular marshmallows melted slightly with butter for a similar effect.
- Eggs: No substitution for eggs in this easy recipe.
- Half n Half: This is the base that creates the rich French toast batter. Swap the half n half for milk or a dairy-free alternative if needed.
- Vanilla Extract: Leave it our or use almond or butter extract if you're more into it.
- Cinnamon: I love cinnamon but you could leave it out or swap for cinnamon sugar if you wish.
- Salted Butter: This gives the rolls that golden crust. Use unsalted butter and a pinch of salt if you prefer.
- White Sugar & Hot Chocolate Mix: The sugar-cocoa coating is essential for the hot chocolate vibe. Adjust the sweetness to your taste with more or less hot chocolate mix.
- Hot Chocolate: For dipping! Use your favorite mix or make it from scratch for an extra special touch.
How to Make It
This hot chocolate french toast bites recipe is the best way to bring all the cozy vibes of winter into one fun and easy dish. Whether you're looking for a playful breakfast idea or a unique holiday treat, these marshmallow-stuffed hot chocolate French toast rolls are guaranteed to make everyone smile. Just don’t forget the extra cocoa for dipping! Let's make it!
PREP THE ROLLS: Split King's Hawaiian sweet rolls in half and spread about 1 tablespoon of marshmallow fluff inside each one. Close them up and set aside.
MAKE THE BATTER: In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, half n half, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until smooth.
SOAK THE ROLLS: Submerge each stuffed roll in the French toast batter for about 15–20 seconds. Don’t soak them too long, or they’ll get soggy.
COOK THE ROLLS: Heat a large fry pan over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add half the rolls and cook until golden brown on all six sides. Remove them, melt the remaining butter, and repeat with the second batch.
COAT IN COCOA SUGAR: Mix white sugar and hot chocolate mix in a shallow dish. Toss each cooked roll in the mixture until fully coated.
SERVE: Plate the hot chocolate french toast bites and serve with a steaming mug of hot chocolate for dipping. These are best enjoyed warm and gooey!
