This whipped brie dip is the perfect cheesy appetizer. I like to top it with honey and fig jam and serve it with truffled potato chips or crostini.
What is it?
I first saw the whipped brie trend on social media thanks to my friend @ainttooproudtomeg!
She was inspired by Thomas Keller who created the original appetizer dish at the French Laundry.
Cheese aficionados will love this whipped brie recipe because it's such an easy way to up your appetizer game. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create the perfect appetizer that went wild on tiktok trends.
If you're one of us brie lovers, you probably have your favorite flavor pairings. But since I wanted to make sure you had even more fun ways to serve this brie spread, I shared a few of my favorite recommendations below.
As for how to serve, it would be lovely on a cheese board or as a centerpiece on your charcuterie boards. You could also serve this whipped cheese on its own or even as a brie brûlée.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Brie: You'll need at least 2 8 ounce wheels of brie for this whipped brie appetizer. Thomas Keller originally used Brie de Meaux but if you can't find it where you live, you can substitute another type of brie. The great thing about this recipe is that you can essentially turn a not so great piece of brie cheese into a delicious, fluffy version of brie that will have everyone wanting more. And if you're using one of the extra fancy triple cream brie cheeses, then it will taste just like buttery brie cheese dip! This recipe also works for other soft cheese like cream cheese or goat cheese.
- Honey: I not only top this whipped brie cheese recipe with honey, but I also use honey to make the brie looser and creamier in the food processor. If you want a spicy twist, you could swap it for hot honey.
- Fig Jam: This is totally optional but I think fig jam is lovely with brie. If you want more flavor suggestions, you can scroll down to see my flavor pairing guide.
- Pistachios: If you don't like pistachios, you could leave them off or use a another toasted or candied nut.
- Flaky Salt: Not required but I think flaky salt such as Maldon adds a beautiful crunch and salty bite that can really bring all the flavors out.
- Chips, Crackers or Crostini: I highly recommend serving this easy recipe with truffle potato chips, but you could serve it with fresh bread or toasted baguette slices. Feel free to pair it with fresh fruit like apples or pears. Or switch it up and use crunchy fresh vegetables like some cucumber slices, baby carrots or bell peppers.
Best Way to Remove the Brie Rind
The best way to remove the brie rind is to make sure that your brie is super cold. The coldness keeps the brie from oozing out and thus the brie rind will be easier to cut off. Feel free to pop your brie in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to help solidify it and make it easier to cut up.
You'll also want to have a super sharp knife or another tool that will help you remove the brie rind most efficiently. I recommend either a freshly sharped chefs knife, a large serrated knife for bread, a super large vegetable peeler or even a stainless steal cheese slicer.
Once it's cold, place the wheel of brie on a cutting board. Slice the larger top and bottom surfaces off of the whole wheel of brie first then cut off the thin edges on the side. Once all the rind is removed, you can either cut it into smaller pieces of tear it up with your hands.
If you still have some little bits of the rind on there and you can't remove it without a large clump of the brie coming off, use the back of a spoon to scrape it off.
If you don't like the leftover rind, you can toss it in the garbage, or blend it into soups, stews or brothy beans that could use a cheesy note.
How to make it
Remove Brie Rind: The first step to making this creamy brie cheese dip is to remove the rind from your cheese as I mentioned above. Once the brie rind is removed, then it's important to let the cheese come to room temperature.
Bring it to Room Temp: After that, you can use your hands to rip the brie up and place it in a food processor, electric mixer, or the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment.
Add Honey & Whip Brie: Next, add a hefty drizzle of honey. Then start whipping the cheese on medium speed until it's got a creamy texture. You will most likely need to scrape the sides of the bowl down every minute or so to get the best creamy consistency.
Plate it: Once it's smooth and creamy, spread it out in a shallow serving bowl - making sure that you have as much surface area as possible.
Add Favorite Toppings: From there, you can add whataever toppings you wan to take this cheese spread to the next level. I recommend adding another generous drizzle of honey, some fig jam, and some crushed pistachios.
Store Leftovers: You probably won't have any leftovers, but if you do, you can place them in an airtight container and keep in the fridge.
