What is Gruyere Grilled Cheese
Gruyere Grilled Cheese, as described, is a delectable twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich, crafted with a blend of rich and creamy Gruyere cheese.
This gourmet version elevates the experience with the addition of savory onion jam, infusing a subtle sweetness and depth of flavor.
The sandwich is further enhanced by the use of salty, creamy salty butter, which, when melted, lends a luxurious texture and amplifies the overall taste.
A hint of thyme is added for an aromatic touch, complementing the cheese and onion jam with its earthy, slightly minty flavor.
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the quick preparation time, taking only about ten minutes to create a sandwich that echoes the flavors of a French onion soup, but in a more convenient, handheld form.
Perfect for a quick gourmet meal, this Gruyere Grilled Cheese promises a harmonious blend of flavors that transforms a simple grilled cheese into a culinary delight.
A gruyere grilled cheese embodies the essence of comfort food with a sophisticated twist.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Sourdough - If you don't like sourdough, use whatever bread you prefer.
- Onion Jam - I get my Onion Jam from Aldi but it's widely available at most grocery stores these days or you can snag it on amazon.
- Gruyere - I'm using Emmi Gruyere because it's the best of the best!
- Salted Butter - If you're using unsalted butter, you can add a pinch of salt to it to make up for it.
- Dried Thyme - You can skip the dried thyme, try rosemary or herbs de provence if you're not into it.
How to make it
Making a gruyere grilled cheese is a dream!
First, smear 1 tablespoon of onion jam onto each slice of bread.
Divide the gruyere in half and then place each half on top of the onion jam.
Place the other two slices of bread on top.
Butter the exterior of the sandwich then finish with a pinch of dried thyme onto each side.
Place the sandwiches in a nonstick pan or cast iron skillet heated over medium.
Cook for a few minutes on each side, flipping once, until both sides are golden brown and all the cheese has melted.
Remove from the heat, cut on a diagonal and enjoy!
