This Creamy Lemon Garlic Chicken Orzo Crockpot Recipe is loaded with juicy chicken, tender orzo pasta, tons of garlic, fresh spinach, and parmesan cheese, all tossed in a rich, lemony cream sauce. It's the ultimate easy slow cooker dinner that tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen, even though your Crock-Pot® does most of the work!

Why You'll Love It
If there's one thing I love more than a big bowl of creamy, cheesy pasta, it's one that is mostly hands off And this Creamy Lemon Garlic Chicken Orzo Crockpot Recipe is exactly the kind of dinner I want waiting for me after a busy day!
We're talking tender bites of juicy chicken in a creamy orzo pasta. It's loaded with fresh garlic, parmesan cheese, and a rich sauce that gets brightened up with plenty of fresh lemon juice and zest. It's cozy comfort food, but the lemon keeps everything tasting fresh instead of overly heavy.
I've developed a LOT of creamy pasta and chicken recipes over the years, and one thing I've learned is that timing is everything. Especially when you're cooking pasta in a slow cooker! Unlike a traditional one-pot meal on the stovetop, where you can constantly adjust the heat, slow cooker recipes need a little more planning.
That's why I like cooking the chicken first, then adding the orzo pasta and heavy cream toward the end. This gives the chicken time to become tender without turning the orzo into a mushy situation. Because nobody wants that!
For this recipe, I'm using my Crock-Pot® 10-Quart Slow Cooker, which is perfect for making a big batch. With four pounds of boneless skinless chicken breasts and four cups of dry orzo, there's plenty to feed the whole family and still have leftovers for lunch the next day.
And the best part? You don't need to brown the chicken in olive oil. You don't need to boil the orzo separately... And you definitely don't need to dirty a bunch of pots and pans. Everything comes together in one slow cooker with simple ingredients and very little hands-on work.
Whether you're looking for a family-friendly dinner, an easy chicken recipe for busy weeknights, or a new way to enjoy creamy orzo, this one's definitely worth adding to your regular rotation.

Ingredients & Substitutions
You don't need anything fancy to make this delicious dinner, and most of these basic ingredients are probably already hanging out in your kitchen. Here's what you'll need, along with my favorite substitutions and tips for getting the best flavor.
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts: I like cutting the chicken into small, evenly sized pieces so they cook quickly and you get juicy chicken in every bite. You can also use boneless skinless chicken thighs if you prefer dark meat, but the cooking time may vary.
- Italian seasoning: This adds a delicious blend of herbs without needing a million different spices. If you don't have any, combine dried oregano, basil, and a little thyme.
- Kosher salt: Essential for seasoning the chicken and bringing out all those delicious flavors. I recommend using low-sodium chicken broth so you have more control over the final seasoning.
- Fresh garlic: We're using ten cloves because we're not messing around with the garlic flavor! I prefer finely sliced garlic because it becomes mellow and sweet as it cooks. Minced garlic works too, or you can substitute garlic powder in a pinch.
- Chicken broth: This is the flavorful base of the recipe and provides the liquid needed to cook the orzo. I use four cups of chicken broth total, starting with one cup for the chicken and adding the remaining three cups with the pasta. Keep a little extra broth nearby in case the orzo needs more liquid.
- Heavy cream: This gives the creamy sauce its rich, velvety texture. You could substitute half-and-half if needed, but I prefer heavy cream because it holds up better and creates a richer sauce. Whole milk is a less reliable substitute because it can separate during cooking.
- Orzo pasta: Orzo might look like rice, but it's actually a tiny pasta that absorbs all that delicious garlic chicken flavor. We're using four cups of dry orzo for this recipe, making it a hearty, filling meal. I wouldn't recommend substituting cauliflower rice because it cooks completely differently and doesn't release the starch that makes this dish creamy.
- Parmesan cheese: Freshly grated parmesan cheese adds salty, nutty flavor and helps thicken the sauce. I always recommend grating it yourself because pre-shredded cheese doesn't melt quite as smoothly.
- Cream cheese: One block of cream cheese makes this creamy chicken orzo dish extra rich and luscious. Let it soften at room temperature while the orzo cooks, then cut it into smaller pieces so it melts easily into the warm pasta.
- Baby spinach: I use an entire bag of fresh spinach because it wilts down so much. It adds a beautiful fresh pop of color and makes this chicken dinner feel a little more balanced. You could substitute chopped kale, but you'll need to give it additional time to soften.
- Fresh lemons: Both the lemon zest and lemon juice are important here! The zest adds fragrant citrus flavor, while the juice cuts through the richness of the cream and cheese. Fresh lemons are definitely worth using for the best flavor.
- Black pepper: A little freshly cracked black pepper brings everything together. If you like a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes when serving.
- Optional Additions: If you're feeling adventurous next time, you could add chopped sun-dried tomatoes for a crockpot Tuscan chicken-inspired twist. Or finish with fresh herbs like parsley or basil. I love experimenting with new flavors, but there's something about this classic lemon, garlic, and parmesan combination that just works.

How to Make Creamy Lemon Garlic Chicken Orzo in the Crockpot
This easy recipe is all about adding the ingredients in stages so everything cooks properly and you end up with perfectly tender chicken and creamy orzo. The slow cooker does the heavy lifting, but a few little tricks make a big difference in the final texture.
- PREP THE CHICKEN: Cut the boneless skinless chicken breasts into small, evenly sized cubes, about one inch each. Add the chicken to the bottom of the slow cooker and season with Italian seasoning and kosher salt. Add the finely sliced garlic and chicken broth, then stir everything together.
- SLOW COOK THE CHICKEN: Cover and cook on LOW for approximately 2-3 hours.YOu could also do HIGH for 1-1½ hours but I recommend slow and low. Basically cook it until the chicken is cooked through and tender. The exact cooking time will depend on your slow cooker and the size of the chicken pieces - we want them tiny! Since the chicken will continue cooking with the orzo, you don't want to overcook it during this first stage.
- ADD THE ORZO: Stir in the four cups of dry orzo pasta, one cup of heavy cream, and the cream cheese. Give everything a really good stir. You want to make sure the pasta is evenly distributed and submerged in the liquid as much as possible.
- COOK UNTIL TENDER: Cover and cook on HIGH for approximately 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally so the orzo doesn't stick to the bottom of the slow cooker. Check the pasta around the 20-minute mark. You're looking for tender, slightly al dente orzo and chicken that has reached an internal temperature of 165°F. If the pasta needs more time or the mixture gets too thick, add a splash of hot chicken broth and continue cooking in short increments.
- MAKE IT CREAMY: Once the orzo is tender and the chicken is fully cooked, turn off the slow cooker. Add the freshly grated parmesan cheese and fold in the fresh baby spinach, lemon zest, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. The residual heat will wilt the spinach. And the lemon adds that bright, fresh flavor that makes this chicken dish so delicious. Taste and adjust with additional kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper as needed.
- SERVE: Spoon the creamy lemon garlic chicken orzo into bowls and finish with extra parmesan cheese, freshly cracked black pepper, and a little more lemon zest. You can also add fresh herbs or a pinch of red pepper flakes if you're feeling fancy.
- SAVE: Let leftovers cool briefly, then transfer them to shallow airtight containers and refrigerate within two hours. They'll keep for 3-4 days. The orzo will absorb more of the creamy sauce as it sits. So feel free to add a splash of chicken broth or heavy cream when reheating. Warm gently until heated through to 165°F.

What to Pair It With
Since this creamy lemon garlic chicken orzo is already a pretty hearty meal, I like serving it with something fresh, crunchy, or a little crispy to balance out all that cheesy goodness. Here are four recipes from my site that would be absolutely delicious alongside it!
First up, my Cacio e Pepe Roasted Green Beans and Carrots are SUCH a good match. They're roasted until tender, then tossed with butter, lemon juice, and pecorino cheese. The lemon ties everything together, while the roasted vegetables add a little texture to the meal.
If you're craving something fresh and crunchy, my Easy Italian Grinder Salad is another great option. It's loaded with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, banana peppers, and a tangy dressing that cuts right through the richness of the creamy sauce. Plus, it's easy to prep while the slow cooker does its thing.
And because there's absolutely nothing wrong with a little extra carb situation. Try my Butter Swim Biscuits. They would be incredible for soaking up every last drop of that lemony parmesan sauce. They're golden and crispy on the outside, soft and buttery in the middle, and especially delicious with the savory cowboy butter.
Or, if you're making this for a cozy dinner with friends, I got you! Start with my Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar Bread Dip. It's loaded with sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, parmesan, and fresh herbs, making it the perfect little appetizer while everyone waits for dinner. Add some crusty bread and a glass of white wine, and you're in business!
