Ingredients & Substitutions
Here’s what you’ll need for this flavorful ground pork stir fry. Don't forget you can find the exact ingredient amounts and printable recipe card for this easy stir fry recipe can be found at the bottom of this post.
- Sesame oil: This adds a nutty, toasty base. You could use avocado oil, peanut oil, or vegetable oil in a pinch. Olive oil also works but the sesame oil adds so much more flavor.
- Sliced shiitake mushrooms: They bring an earthy umami vibe. Baby bella or button mushrooms from the grocery store also work.
- Ground pork: I use a full 1 lb of ground pork for the best flavor. Ground beef, ground turkey, or even ground chicken are great swaps.
- Onion: A finely diced onion adds sweetness and depth. Shallots or green onions can work too. You could leave it out if you're not into onions though.
- Green beans: These give a nice crunch, but you could use other veggies. Try red bell pepper, green pepper, snow peas, snap peas, or broccoli florets instead.
- Ginger paste: I love buying the fresh ginger paste from the vegetable section at the grocery store. But fresh ginger is always a win. Ground ginger works in a pinch. YOu could also swap it for garlic powder if you don't like ginger.
- Hoisin sauce: Sweet and savory with tons of flavor—oyster sauce or dark soy sauce could sub in if needed. If you don't have hoisin sauce, you could use gochujang paste instead. Or swap it for 2 tablespoon of brown sugar which will help caramelize the ground meat.
- Peanut butter: It adds creaminess and a subtle nuttiness to create a super flavorful creamy gravy. Almond butter or tahini would also work.
- Soy sauce: Regular or low-sodium. For more depth, add a splash of fish sauce, rice vinegar or dark soy sauce.
- Crispy Chili Oil: if you want spicy, add some crispy chili oil to your cooked pork.
- Salt & pepper: Simple seasoning that makes everything pop - kosher is the best salt and fresh cracked pepper is always a winner.
- Optional Additions: fresh herbs and sesame seeds are also fun for toppings if you want to get creative.
How to Make It
Here’s the easy way to whip up this flavorful ground pork stir fry recipe:
- COOK MUSHROOMS: Add sesame oil to a large heavy-bottomed pot or hot skillet over medium-high heat. Toss in the mushrooms with a pinch of salt. Cook for a few minutes until they soften and get a little color.
- BROWN THE PORK: Scoot the mushrooms to the side and add the ground pork and another pinch of salt. Use a wooden spoon or meat masher to break it up as it cooks.
- ADD VEGGIES & AROMATICS: Once the pork is almost cooked through, add the green beans, onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir and cook over medium heat until the pork is fully cooked and the green beans just start to soften.
- MAKE THE SAUCE: Push everything to the sides and create a little space in the middle of the pan. Add the hoisin sauce, peanut butter, and soy sauce in the middle. Using a spatula, mash and mix it together until smooth, then toss everything to coat in the flavorful sauce. Cook for another couple of minutes until the green beans are crisp-tender.
- FINISH & SERVE: Remove from heat. Drizzle with crispy chili oil or sprinkle red pepper flakes if you want a little heat. Serve over white rice, brown rice, or cauliflower rice or toss with rice noodles for a fun twist.
