This easy homemade tzatziki sauce recipe is one of my favorite greek yogurt dips. After going to Greece a few years ago, I quickly learned that my version of this iconic dip was not authentic by any means but it’s still my family’s favorite sauces I make which is why I’m sharing it!

Ingredients and Substitutions
- Persian Cucumber - Persian cucumbers are the best in my opinion because the skin is thin and there's barely any seeds. Regular cucumbers work, too, you might just want to shave the skin off and scoop out the seeds.
- Plain Greek Yogurt - You could also use sour cream if you absolutely have to but greek yogurt is really the only way to go in my opinion.
- Red Onion - Shallot or white onion also work!
- Garlic Clove - You could also use garlic paste.
- Lemon - Lemon is the best - whether it's fresh squeezed or from a bottle - def don't skip it.
- Finishing Olive Oil - I think a high quality olive oil adds so much flavor but you could also use whatever olive oil you're working with.
- Fresh Mint - Dried mint also works, you'll just use less.
- Fresh Dill - Dried dill also works, you'll just use less.
- Kosher Salt - Any sort of traditional salt works just fine.
How to make it
Making tzatziki sauce is super easy.
You'll want to begin by removing the excess moisture from the cucumber.
To be quite honest, this step is optional but recommended. I sometimes don't have time to do this and the dip is still just as delicious when I use cucumbers straight from the grater.
If you do choose to take this route, you can do so by wrapping the grated cucumber strands in a paper towel or cheese cloth and squeeze or by placing it in a strainer and pressing down until the liquid runs out.
Once the cucumber is prepped, simply add all ingredients to a bowl or tupperware and stir it all together.
Season to taste and add more lemon juice or salt and pepper if needed.
