Instead of frying up bacon to make this recipe, we’re relying on store-bought real bacon crumbles that add a perfect smoky, meaty crunch to this sandwich.
And although it’s not in the recipe, you can make this bubba burger patty melt even more delicious with a smear of my shake shack sauce recipe.
Ingredients
- Bubba Burger: Bubba Burgers are perfect for this recipe because they're quick, convenient and totally delicious. If you want to make your hamburger patties from scratch, check out my butter burger smashburger recipe.
- Bread: I love sourdough bread for this recipe but you could also try rye bread, wheat bread, thick cut white bread, texas toast or potato bread.
- Cheese: Havarti is my go-to for patty melts because it has so much flavor and it melts beatifully. You could also use american cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, white cheddar, mozzarella, muenster, swiss or even pepperjack.
- Caramelized Onions: My quick caramelized onion recipe hack is amazing for this recipe because it only takes 15 minutes. But if you don't like onions, you could leave them out.
- Bacon: Bacon is totally optional. You can either use crumbled fresh cooked bacon or do as I do and rely on the storebought real bacon crumbles.
- Butter: Salted butter works best but if you only have unsalted butter, you can add a pinch of kosher salt to make up for it.
How to make a Bubba Burger Patty Melt
Pan Fry your Bubba Burgers: Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium and add BUBBA burgers. Pan fry for 5-7 minutes on each side then flip - once they reach an internal temp of 160F, they’re done! This recipe can also be made with grilled bubba burgers or leftover cooked bubba burgers.
Build your Sandwiches: Add four slices of bread to a cutting board and top with half the cheese. Then evenly distribute the caramelized onions and bacon. Add the cooked burgers on top followed by the rest of the cheese. Add the remaining slices of bread on top and butter the exterior of the sandwiches.
Grill the Sandwiches: Add the prepared sandwiches to a large cast iron skillet or flat top and cook for a few minutes on each side - or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has completely melted.
Let Rest & Serve: Once these bubba burger patty melts are done, let them rest for 1 minute before serving.
If you have any leftovers (which I highly doubt!), You can wrap them up in tinfoil or an airtight container and keep in the fridge for 3 days.
