Easy Guava Pastries Recipe with Cream Cheese (Pastelitos)
This guava pastry recipe is inspired by the pastelitos de guayaba y queso from South Florida's Cuban bakeries. With just a few ingredients and a little time, you’ll have golden brown bites of sweet, tangy, tropical heaven.
Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4 equal pieces. Repeat with the second sheet, giving you 8 squares total.
Slice the cream cheese and guava paste into 1 oz pieces (about ¼-inch thick). Place one slice of cream cheese and one slice of guava paste diagonally across the center of each puff pastry square.
Fold the two opposite corners of the pastry toward the middle, covering the filling. Dab a small amount of whisked egg white onto the edges to seal them securely.
Arrange the pastries on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, lightly coat the tops of the pastries with the remaining egg white. Sprinkle each with sparkling sugar for extra crunch and shine.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastries are puffed up and golden brown.
Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before serving.
