Each spring, the city of Brooksville hosts its annual Blueberry Festival to celebrate Florida’s blueberry harvest. And although most people don’t associate the Sunshine State with blueberries, it turns out that we’re really, really good at growing them!
Since I’m a blueberry-loving girl and grew up picking these sweet yet tart little fruits at my Meme’s farm, I was super excited when VISIT FLORIDA asked us to cover this tasty festival. Not only were there a ton of creative street food vendors, but there’s also a local blueberry market where you can buy all things (you guessed it) blueberry related, and a super-fun 1,000-foot waterslide that runs down the heart of downtown Brooksville. Today was just one of those days. I woke up with a slight hangover from partying way too hard with my Grandma and Grandpa. (Yes, you read that correctly. They get lit especially when it’s $5 martini night at our local steakhouse.) I couldn’t find anything to wear. Haley, my bestie who always helps me do my makeup, was out of town. Back when i was in college, i practically lived on pita fries from this greek spot called Pitaria right down the street from my dorm at Florida State University. My affinity for a high carb diet led me to basically become obsessed with these beautifully golden deep fried pita sticks that were tossed in herbs and spices and plunged into a creamy feta cheese dip. After my second winter of eating my weight in these, I realized that it probably wasn’t a good idea to eat so much fried food. So instead of spending all of my time, money, and daily allotted calories at Pitaria, I decided to change the game and get my act a little healthier. Continue reading
